What is memory document archive?
memory document archive is an ongoing archival art project by artist and collector Laura Joan Smith. The project explores the themes of collection and memory.
By using archival processes such as collecting, arranging and cataloguing the project intends to simultaneously organise and store the artist's memories of her life and to explore the idea of giving value to disposable items such as receipts, sweet wrappers and train tickets. The inclusion of sound recordings within the project investigates the link between sound and memory, particularly the ability of sound to evoke strong memories in the listener.
What started life as a small archive of disposable items has grown to include 100s of items, an online catalogue and plans for further future collecting.
Items in the archive are arranged into four collections; Japan, Seaside, Christmas and London.
